Hand building is almost as old as mankind and includes every kind of pottery making without the use of a wheel. Here you find Pinching, Coiling, Extruding, Moulding, Slip-Casting and Slab Work. It is immensely satisfying for the novice to be able to form a vessel from a ball of clay with no other tools than one’s own hands. This is essentially what is referred to when one talks about pinching, or pinch-pots. On a somewhat larger scale follows the ancient craft of coiling, where multiple coils of clay are joined in stages to create large shapes. This technique also does not really require any kind of tool other than your two hands. Even nowadays really large pots are still created in this way. Moulding and Slip Casting are covered in more detail in our Mould Making classes. In slab work the potter creates shapes from slabs of clay which are cut from a block or rolled out with a rolling pin. Extruding requires the use of a special tool, a so-called extruder, which produces seamless tubes of clay. Depending on the used die one can extrude a large variety of different shapes which then can be used in making or decorating other pieces. In Hand building the options are endless and your imagination is the limit, so come and join us for some great creativity and lots of fun exploring the fascination of clay.

Favourite hand building: Fairy Houses and Garden Decoration
Hand building is a very relaxing part of doing pottery for me. I am having fun with doing fairy houses and add little funny features to it.  I also like making garden decoration, especially round shapes. My classes with hand building are very social and we  laugh a lot. Cookies and tea are a regular occurrence at our classes. Students bring sketches or pictures of the objects they want to build and we discuss how it can be made, what clay to use best and what glazing could be done.
