With very few exceptions, ceramics only come to life if they are glazed.

A Glaze is essentially a thin layer of glass that has been fused onto a ceramic surface. The glaze serves two main purposes. Besides its enormous potential for decorating a ceramic piece, its most important function is to seal it. Fired, unglazed clay is usually quite porous, as can be seen, and sometimes even heard, when dunking a terracotta pot into a bucket of water.

Unglazed tableware would quickly become very unsightly, so a layer of glass is applied which makes the surface impermeable. Glazes are a wide and very interesting field and some ceramic artists spend a whole lifetime specialising in glazes and searching for the ultimate recipe. This has caused the field of glazing to be mystified.

Many potters have been scared off experimenting and use either commercially available, ready-to-use glazes or religiously stick to recipes that have been recorded, treating them like the holy grail. Glazes are applied in a variety of ways, and in our Glazing Basics Classes we teach our students the respective techniques, together with an introduction into the composition of a glaze.

For those students who want to explore this field in more depth, we will hold dedicated workshops where they can start to immerse themselves into this ultimate decoration tool.

Favourite glaze: Rutile based and matt glazes

I love exploring the world of glazing. I am always experimenting with Cone 6 glazes in oxidation.

There are different methods to experiment when testing glazing and the results are always a surprise. Nothing more exciting as to have created your own glaze recipe.

I can show and help you mixing and testing your own glaze.
